The male has a gray plumage with extensive red facial skin, red legs and feet, black ornamental crest, reddish brown eye íris and black tail, long and curved. The female is a brown bird with blackened wings.

Distributed between the lowlands and green forests of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam in Southeast Asia. This species is also designated as the national bird of Thailand.
